connecticut. >> reporter: it was back to class for most students in newtown, connecticut tuesday. but hardly back to normal. >> i feel worried. i'm nervous. but at the same time, i'm feeling -- happy to be back at school. >> it's tragic and we're stunned. but they've got the keep going with their lives as well. >> reporter: the teachers' union said educators will discus friday's mass shooting in an age-appropriate manner. sandy hook elementary students have not yet returned to class. they'll be moved to another facility in a neighboring county administrators say they won't return to classes until january. trucks carrying supplies have been leaving the school still a crime scene. the tragedy even has lawmakers normally in support of gun rights discussing gun control. like senator joe manchin of west virginia. >> we had 20 beautiful babies that were slaughtered. that cannot be tolerated in america. >> reporter: funerals began monday for the 20 children and

six adults killed. tuesday families said their final good-byes to two more 6- year-olds. jessica rekos and james mattioli. they are releasing new information today of the suspected shooter and his mother. he also said that the mother was found shoot in the head four times. while she was sleeping. in newtown, connecticut. i'm tory dunnan reporting. >> today virginia's governor said it's time to start discussing if school officials should be armed. bob mcdonnell said similar conversations took place in the month after the september 11th attacks and he thinks now main to time to extend that talk the school -- to schools. >> if people were armed not just a police officer but other school officials, that were trained and chose to have a weapon, certain simply there have been an opportunity to -- certainly there have been an opportunity to stop aggressors coming into the school. >> right now there's a complete ban on all the firearms within

1,000 feet of virginia schools. if exception is law enforcement officers. within the last hour, virginia congressman jerry continually issued a statement saying he's appalled by the gov nor's reaction -- governor's reaction. it reads in part -- well, the leader of the brady campaign to prevent gun violence says more guns is totally the wrong approach. today dan gross and the relatives of victims of some of the nation's worst gun massacres were demanding that congress and the president enact some common gun laws -- common sense gun laws. bruce leshan has that story. >> my little brother derrick once was riddled with bullets. >> reporter: a litany of pain. >> i am here today wearing my son's shoes. >> reporter: almost to painful to bear. >> they're the shoes he was wearing on april 20th. 1999 when he was gunned down at

columbine shall. >> reporter: one after the over. dozens of relatives recited their stories. >> a. j. boyd was killed in the aurora theater shooting. >> reporter: every day in america nearly this many families become new victims of gun violence. >> my son miraculously survived. >> reporter: andre's 8-year-old son bear was walking towards the presence pal's office -- principal's office in newtown. >> he saw bullets passing by. >> reporter: a teacher rescued him. >> she pulled him in her own classroom. >> reporter: now he says washington has to rescue america with sensible gun laws. >> it's not a partisan issue. it's an issue of safety of our children. >> reporter: but some argue the solution is more guns, not fewer and that an armed principal for instance might have saved lives at sandy hook elementary. >> but she takes him out. >> that is insane.

>> reporter: instead, the families suggest a solution might include a renewed ban on assault rifles. and closing loopholes that allow 40% of gun sales to go through with no background checks. >> i think about my sister every time i hear about a shooting. >> omar of chantilly lost his sister at virginia tech. >> 74% of nra members support universal background check so what are we waiting for. >> reporter: the families convinced the slaughter of 20 innocents will tip the country to change. bruce leshan, 9news now. >> after days of silence the national rifle association released a statement on the shootings this afternoon and it reads in part -- flush the group's also scheduled a press conference for friday. now we have gotten a lot of feedback from you through facebook and twitter in the days since the shooting. and we want the take a moment

country will hit the command tour budget cuts and the tax hikes known as the fiscal cliff. and today house speaker john boehner started working on what he's calling plan b. just in case there's no deal in the next 14 s days. but the senate majority leader harry reid says there's just no way that extension of the current tax rates will pass both houses of congress. the white house says the president's move toward a compromise with the speaker offering to raise taxes on taxpayers earning more than $400,000 a year. that's instead of the $250,000 threshold he had campaigned on. the fiscal cliff negotiations were very much on the minds of a few thousand people who gathered today right next to the capitol as matt jablow tells us their voices were loud and their message was clear. >> reporter: in the shadow of the nation's capitol. >> amen. >> reporter: where talks couldn'ted today to to avow -- continue today to try to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff. >> now is not the time for congress to turn its backs on us. >> reporter: several thousand people came together at the

11 years after the attack at the pentagon and world trade center we're learning more about the health effects on the rescue and recovery workers and survivors. according to a study out today in journal of the american medical association the attack exposed survivors the large amounts of known and suspected car sen jeans. it raises the risk of cancer to those who were exposed to the rare around -- air around the site. >> most solid tumors have a very long latency period and many don't appear for many years or decades after the initial exposure. >> that is prompting doctors to recommend continued tracking of those types of cancers in people exposadad to the site -- exposed to the site at goes. the second prepares for the greater number of witnesses and policewoman now of -- glitz and glamour of the inauguration. we'll be back.

yes, we're starting to get more details about some of the festivities surrounding the president's second inauguration. president barack obama plans to attend a prayer service at the national cathedral the morning after he takes the oath of office. this will be january 2 #nd. the president will be sworn in twice, once at a private ceremony on the 20th and again at the formal public one on the 21st. it's all only about a month away which means it's never too early to start thinking about ladies how are you going to

robert griffin iii was pretty and it with his feelings after getting -- candid with his feelings after getting benched sunday. the doctors didn't feel the same way. now the will he or won't he game continues. according to espn a leading orthopedist says an injury like griffin's takes at least three weeks to heal. mike shanahan wants griffin to be 100% but the rookie is ready to go he says. >> i feel like i could play this week next week the week after this. but that's not my decision once again. >> we're going to play robert when he's 100%. when that ligament is fine and the doctors feel that he can go out there and perform at the level in a game situation

without injury, we're going to go with our starter. hundreds of kids enjoyed a very special day at fedex field today. several washington redskins' players and the u.s. marine corps gave out over 1,000 toys to deserving kids. lots of goodies there for them. the washington wizards aren't the only teams underperforming in the washington area. the mystics have won just 11 games over the past two seasons but now they're hoping new leadership will help right the ship. today the mystics introduced mike thibault as the new head coach and general manager. he's a two-time wnba coach of the year and led the connecticut suns for ten years. he has high hopes for the young team. >> with the resources here and the fan base here there's no reason this cannot be one of the best if not the best franchise in the wnba and after our meetings i walked aid way with that feeling that we were headed in that direction. and the wizards host the
